Saturday, February 4, was the annual Pink Game for the D’Youville College women’s basketball team, helping to bring awareness and funds to an excellent cause.
The team’s annual Pink Game is put on in an effort to help raise funds for breast cancer awareness. Throughout the day and at the game, members of D’Youville’s Athletics Committee sold t-shirts to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. In addition to t-shirt sales, 50/50 raffle tickets were sold to raise money.
With all efforts combined, the team raised $600 for the Susan B. Komen Foundation. In the last two years combined, the team has raised nearly $1,000 in support of breast cancer awareness through their pink games.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women ages 20 to 59 in the U.S. Upwards of 200,000 men and women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and over 40,000 in the U.S., both men and women, will die from breast cancer this year. The Susan G. Komen Foundation has funded $920 million for breast cancer awareness since 1982 for research and greater than $2.0 billion in medical care, psychosocial support and community and provider education. The foundation serves 60 countries throughout the world, serving millions of people. Due in part to the foundation, the mortality rate of breast cancer has declined 37% from 1990-2013.
Head coach Dan Glover and the women’s basketball team were proud to be able to participate to give to such a wonderful foundation. “Giving back is part of what D’Youville was built on, and we as a team want to help out however we can,” said Glover. “Our annual Pink Game is something that our team looks forward to and the support from parents and fans was outstanding. Being able to raise this money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation really means a lot to our group.”
