On Monday, February 22, the D’Youville College Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Athletics Committee put on Project Linus, an event where D’Youville student athletes make blankets to give away to children in need.
“I would like to say thank you to all the student athletes, Athletics Committee members, and SAAC representatives who helped making the blankets for Project Linus,” said Athletics Committee Co-Chair and D’Youville Baseball player Travis Macrides.
Each one of the 14 sports teams at D’Youville were represented Monday evening, with teams working together to make blankets. The blankets were made from taking two equal sizes of fleece material and laying one on top of the other. Then, strips were cut around the edge of the blanket and the two strips of fleece were tied together, creating the blanket.
This year, 76 blankets were made. In 2015, 75 blankets were made and in 2014, 50 blankets were made by SAAC and the Athletics Committee. The 76 blankets that were donated will be distributed to children in local hospitals, shelters, social services agencies, or anywhere that a child might be in need of comfort as part of Project Linus.
“These blankets will help to provide a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are in need. The blankets are for children that are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need with the gift of new, homemade blankets,” Macrides added.
The mission of Project Linus is to provide homemade blankets to children in need. All of the blankets will be donated to the local chapter of Project Linus in Western New York. Project Linus is a non-profit organization that was created in 1998 and has chapters in all 50 states.
SAAC is made up of student athlete representatives from each of D’Youville’s 14 sports who are determined to improve the community by giving back and participating in events such as the Project Linus.
