The Hilbert College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted their very first "Pink Power" week in October and the Hawks had a great time supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month. Their goal was not only to gather donations to help fund research to battle the disease, but to encourage conversation and unity on campus.
Currently in 2015 there are more than 2.8 million women with a history of breast cancer in the United States. SAAC hoped to educate the campus' student population and faculty as well as the local community on the risks of breast cancer and what and where to go for help.
SAAC sold pink pom-poms and pink and white bracelets Monday through Thursday, October 19-22 leading up to the annual "Pink Out" game which was held October 22 when the volleyball team hosted Houghton College.
Student-athletes showed their support at the game wearing their grey, long sleeve "Let's Get It Off Our Chest" shirts designed by the SAAC officers. The crowd was loud and supportive and helped the Hawks' efforts on the court.
In addition to merchandise sales, SAAC raised $290 through 50/50 raffles at four home events that week and during the bake sale at the "Pink Out" game. All proceeds will be donated to the Western New York chapter of Susan G. Komen.
To close the week, student-athletes got up early on a Friday morning (wow!!), put on their breast cancer shirts and formed a ribbon in the gym. The support from the school, students, and the community is what made the week possible.
SAAC hopes to have an even bigger turn out next year!
