On Friday, February 12, student-athletes, students and staff from Mount Aloysius College volunteered at an event called “A Night to Shine” at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Johnstown, Pa. This event was a prom night experience through the Tim Tebow Foundation and was for people with special needs aged 16 and older.
There were more than 200 host churches in 48 states and eight countries that hosted this event on the same night around the world. Some volunteers were prom “buddies” where they were partnered up with an honored guest and spent the night doing various activities with them. Other volunteers helped in the parking lots, shined shoes and helped with the activities. Activities included hair styling, make up, shoe shining, a stroll down the red carpet, dinner, dancing, karaoke, limo rides, a photo booth and caricatures. Also, close to the end of the evening, all of the honored guests were crowned kings and queens. The Mountie softball team and members of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee participated.
Baseball senior Greg Wierzbicki, SAAC President, stated, “It was a good opportunity to give special people the feeling that they are special. God loves them as much as he loves everyone else and they deserve the opportunity to feel like the amazing people they are. It was a blessing to be able to help put a smile on their face all night. It put a lot into perspective for me seeing how happy they are despite the challenges they face.”
