The Mount Aloysius College softball team joined up with the visiting La Roche College Redhawks to raise awareness for pediatric cancer during their softball matchup on Tuesday, April 19. The Mounties did this through a foundation called 'Go 4 the Goal' that helps kids with cancer achieve their goals. The program the teams participated in is called "Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer." This program was started in 2011 and has teams all over the country that wear gold laces during sporting events. Both the Mountie and Redhawk softball teams wore gold laces in honor of those affected by pediatric cancer.
Mountie head coach Carl Teeter decided it would be a great idea to be a part of this program when he was approached about doing it. Teeter stated, "A very good friend of mine has a young son who is battling cancer and I wanted to help in any way possible. What people do not understand is that one in every four elementary schools has a student battling cancer. Most high schools have two students who are current or past cancer patients. Around 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and about 50% of families with a child battling cancer file bankruptcy. Less than 4% of federal funding is dedicated to pediatric cancer research. This is why we all need to lend a helping hand."
