HERZING, PARENT RECEIVE NATIONAL RECOGNITION AFTER STANDOUT PERFORMANCES
Penn State Behrend pitcher Jack Herzing was named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) North Division III Pitcher of the Week and made the D3baseball.com Team of the Week, announced on Tuesday. Pitt-Bradford junior catcher Austin Parent also made the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week and is finalist for HEROSports.com D3 HERO of the Week.
Penn State Behrend pitcher Jack Herzing was named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) North Division III Pitcher of the Week and made the D3baseball.com Team of the Week, announced on Tuesday.
After being named the AMCC Pitcher of the Week, Herzing tabbed ECAC and D3baseball.com honors after striking out 31 batters in 14 innings of work, helping him set Penn State Behrend's new school record for most career strikeouts with 257 K's.
In the first game of the week, the lefty tossed a no-hitter where he fanned 15 of the 21 batters that stepped in the batter's box. Herzing personally retired on the side on three separate occasions. Later in the week, the senior struck out a career-best 16 batters that aided in him breaking the school record for most career strikeouts. In the top of the fourth, he sat down his 11th batter of the game to give him his 257thcareer strikeouts for the most in program history. He threw a no-hitter threw five innings, but ended the game tossing a one-hitter in the seven innings of work.
Pitt-Bradford junior catcher Austin Parent also made the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week and is finalist for HEROSports.com D3 HERO of the Week. Prior to Tuesday's national recognition, Parent was honored as the AMCC Player of the Week on Monday.
Six other players appear on the HERO of the Week ballot that runs until Friday at 2 p.m. Fans are allowed to vote once per hour per device.
With five home runs and 14 RBIs in five games, junior put together a stellar week. Two of his home runs were grand slams, and he hit three in one day during the doubleheader at Pitt-Greensburg. He scored at least one run in each game, totaling 13 overall. In total, he went 13-for-23 (.565) while walking twice and stealing a base. His power numbers helped the Panthers to a 4-1 week in conference games. With seven extra-base hits, his slugging percentage for the weekend was an off-the-charts 1.304. On the season, Parent leads the conference with a .863 slugging percentage and .571 on-base percentage. His 30 RBIs and .466 batting average both rank second in the AMCC.
