#2 Hilbert (19-4, 13-3) hosts #1 Penn St. Behrend (20-2, 14-2) in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference men's basketball showdown Wednesday, February 17 at 6pm in the Hafner Recreation Center in Hamburg, NY. The 6pm game will pit Hilbert, the #1 scoring team in the league against Behrend, the top defensive team.
Penn St. Behrend is entering Wednesday night's rematch against Hilbert ranked as the No. 24 team in Division III. The Lions are looking to secure the AMCC regular season title and the right to host throughout the playoffs, and a win against the Hawks will earn them the No. 1 seed. The Lions are ranked as the top scoring defense in the country, allowing only 58.7 points per game. They also commit the fewest personal fouls per game in the nation at 13.2. Behrend is led by senior forward Zane Hackett and freshman guard Andy Niland. Hackett leads the team and is fifth in the AMCC with 17.2 points per game. He leads the conference and is ninth in Division III in field goal percentage, shooting a 63.4 percent clip. Hackett is also ranked eighth in Division III in double-doubles (14) and Niland ranks eighth in free throw percentage (90.5%). Niland also leads the AMCC in three point percentage at 42.9 percent. The Lions’ disciplined defense hopes to shut down the AMCC’s top scoring offense and capture the regular season crown.
The Hawks (19-4) are riding a six-game winning streak after they dropped a pair of league games mid-January. No other Hilbert team has gone this deep into the season with only four losses.
6'6 senior forward Jerame Owens leads a very balanced Hilbert attack with 16.5 points and 10 rebounds and 59 steals. 6'3 senior guard Sean Weisansal chips in 14.6 points, 4.2 assists and hits 83% from the foul line. 6'1 sophomore guard Jalen Smith adds 14.0 points many beyond the arc as he connects .372 from deep. 6'5 senior forward Ryan Bradt comes off the bench and averages 9.4 points, 4.5 rebounds in 18 minutes a game. 5'11 junior guard Kirkland Ottey runs the offense and tosses in 9.3 points either on the outside or off penetration to the paint. Hilbert leads in conference-only game stats: scoring (87.8 pts), FG% (50.0), Blocks (3.9) per AMCC contest.
