The AMCC men's basketball game of the week features two of the top three teams in the league as Medaille College (12-5, 9-1 AMCC) travels to Penn State Altoona (9-9, 8-3 AMCC) on Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks took over the top spot this past weekend when La Roche, who was previously unbeaten, dropped two straight conference games. Both teams have been in conference play as of late, as Medaille has won six straight and Altoona has won five straight conference games.
The Medaille College men’s basketball team has been playing lights out since coming back from winter break, having won seven of their last eight games, including six in a row. Each of their last five wins have come by 10 points or more, and their play has vaulted them into first place in the AMCC standings. The Mavericks have three players averaging double-digits this season led by senior guard Johnathan Belton. Belton is averaging 16.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. His 51 total steals are second best in the entire country, while his 3.0 steals per game rank fourth in the nation. Junior guard Justice Fagan is also having a break out season, averaging 13.2 points per contest, while his 84% free throw percentage is top-100 in the country.
The Lions continue to lean on their four starting seniors: guard/forwards Javon Wilson, Quinn Luhr, and Anton Lucas, and forward Jordan Smith. Wilson is second in the AMCC in steals (46), sixth in points per game (15.1), and ninth in assists (55), and he has made the fourth-most three-pointers in the conference (36). Luhr has been clutch from beyond the arc and at the free throw line, ranking third in the AMCC in threes made (39) and third in free throw percentage (89.4%), and he is 14th in the league in rebounds per game (5.7) and 20th in points per game (11.7). Lucas has been strong defensively, ranking eighth in the conference in blocks (21) and 10th in steals (27), and he also contributes 9.2 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game. Smith has been one of the top rebounders in the AMCC, grabbing 7.1 boards per game to rank third in the league, and he is also eighth in field goal percentage (49.6%) while scoring 10.3 points per game.
Medaille won the first meeting on their home court, 77-67.
