The AMCC Men's Soccer Game of the Week features two teams that are undfeated in conerence play -- Penn State Altoona and Medaille College -- as the Lions travel to Buffalo, NY to face the Mavs on their home field.
Penn State Altoona men’s soccer (7-1, 2-0 AMCC) is off to its best start in program history through its first eight games, earning seven wins and scoring a conference-best 31 goals. The Lions have been relying on freshman forwards Grady Ballard and Ciaran Corr to spearhead their attack. Ballard leads the AMCC in goals (11), assists (7), points (29), shots on goal (27), penalty kicks (2-2), and game-winning goals (3), while also ranking second in shots attempted (46). Corr is second in the conference in goals (8) and shots attempted (46) while being third in points (18) and shots on goal (24). Meanwhile, freshman goalkeeper Tommy Packevicz is first in the AMCC in wins (7), second in shutouts (2), third in goals against average (1.67), and fourth in save percentage (.740).
Medaille enters the weekend 1-0 in conference play over Pitt-Greensburg, and 4-3 overall. Freshman Ander Castillo leads the Mavericks in goals this season with nine. That puts him in second place in the AMCC. Freshman Solomon Konesky is also a stand-out with three goals scored on the season. Both Konesky and Castillo are a defensive nightmare. The back four on defense consisting of Ben Marrable, Ben Brown, Joshua Bailey, and Joseph Avallone, are a unit that have greatly contributed to the four wins. Goalkeeper David Mighten has been stellar in the net with 22 saves and a .667 save percentage. He is second in the AMCC in goals against with only 11.
Medaille and Penn State Altoona last squared off in 2019. The Mavericks came out on top with a 4-1 victory. The Mavs bring back five returners from that game.
