The Blue Jays controlled possession time in the first half, but the Lions were able to string together a few good scoring chances early. Five of Behrend's six shots were on goal with John Ziobro sending two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, while Johns Hopkins tallied 10 shots with only one coming on goal. Johnathan Swann fired a shot in the third minute that Johns Hopkins' goalkeeper Simon Turner made a full extension save on. In the 15th minute, the Lions recorded back-to-back shots with a diving save made by Turner on Blake Cooper's shot. John Hopkins tallied their two best chances in the first frame in the 38th minute with two consecutive shots, Behrend goalkeeper Anthony Scalise punched the second attempt away to keep the game scoreless.
The Lions began the second half with a set piece, booting a free kick to Andrew Cassano with his shot being sent high in the 46th minute. Johns Hopkins had several chances to take the lead in the middle part of the second frame. The Blue Jays put a ball into the box in the 63rd minute that was deflected, but a quick reaction by Scalise kept the ball out of the net. Junior Brock Kiefer made a team save in the 74th minute, heading the ball away off a corner kick to keep Johns Hopkins off the board. Scalise made another reactionary save in the last minute of the second half on a shot right in front of net by Jason Pan to send the game to extra time.
Johns Hopkins controlled possession in overtime with multiple chances to start the extra 10 minutes, eventually the game-winner was delivered with an unassisted score by Pan in the 99th minute. Pan finished with a game-high eight shots for the Blue Jays, while Ziobro led Behrend with two shots on goal.
Scalise had a good showing in his first collegiate NCAA Tournament game, making four key saves. His counterpart Turner notched five saves in net
