AMCC MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT SET FOR THIS WEEKEND
The AMCC men's tennis championship will take place this weekend, April 20 & 21, at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, PA.
The AMCC men's tennis championship will take place this weekend, April 20 & 21, at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, PA. Penn State Behrend and Penn State Altoona each finished the regular season with 5-1 records in conference play and were named regular season co-champions, but Behrend won the tiebreaker to earn the #1 seed in the conference tournament. The No. 1 seed tiebreaker was total number of match points won between the two teams tied, which Behrend took 10-8. The Behrend Lions will take on #4 Mount Aloysius College on Saturday at 3:30pm in the first semifinal match of the afternoon. #2 Penn State Altoona will face #3 Pitt-Greensburg in the nightcap.
Top seed Penn State Behrend enters the tournament with a 5-1 record and is looking for their third straight conference title. Freshman Luke Vunora went 5-0 on the season, playing the majority of his time in the No. 6 singles spot. Going 5-1 on the season were Jonathon Laier (No. 1 singles), Aidan Piazza (No. 4 singles), and William Thomas (No. 5 singles). In doubles play, Laier and Akash Sangha led Behrend with a 5-0 record in the No. 1 doubles spot.
Also with a 5-1 record in conference play, Penn State Altoona has earned the #2 seed. Sophomore Nick Beard leads Altoona with a 5-0 record at the No. 3 spot while Kadyn Carey compiled a 4-0 record at No. 4 singles. Casey Hess (No. 1 singles), Andrew Chronister (No. 2 singles), and Jackson Newell (No. 6 singles), all went 4-1 on the season. In doubles play, Beard and Carey, along with Chronister and Hess each went 3-1 in conference play this season.
Pitt-Greensburg enters the tournament as the #3 seed with a 2-6 conference record. Deven Summers (No. 1 singles), Michael Opal (No. 3 singles), Roman Ruscitto (No. 4 singles), and Cole McGurk (No. 5 singles) each recorded two wins in conference play for the Bobcats.
Rounding out the field is #6 Mount Aloysius. The Mounties got a win in conference play from Zachary Johnson at the No. 2 singles position.
The AMCC championship match will take place on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
