D'YOUVILLE AND PITT-BRADFORD WOMEN SURVIVE FIRST ROUND
In the first round of the AMCC women's basketball tournament, #3 Pitt-Bradford defeated #6 Pitt-Greensburg, while #4 D'Youville College was triumphant over #5 Mount Aloysius.
In the first round of the AMCC women's basketball tournament, #3 Pitt-Bradford defeated #6 Pitt-Greensburg, while #4 D'Youville College was triumphant over #5 Mount Aloysius. Pitt-Bradford and D'Youville will both advance to the tournament semifinals which will take place Saturday afternoon at La Roche College.
#3 Pitt-Bradford 80, #6 Pitt-Greensburg 72
Third-seeded Pitt-Bradford (17-9, 13-6) trailed by 13 heading into the final quarter and came all the way back to beat sixth-seeded Pitt-Greensburg (10-16, 8-11), 80-72, in the opening round of the AMCC Championships. The Panthers shot more than 50-percent from the floor in the final half and outscored the Bobcats 34-13 in the final 10 minutes to capture the victory. Pitt-Bradford sophomore guard Ali Rinfrette poured in 36 points and added seven assists and six rebounds. Junior forward Brittany Watts had a career night, scoring 22 points and adding 11 boards for her first double-double of the season.
#4 D'Youville College 83, #5 Mount Aloysius College 77
The D'Youville women's basketball team won their sixth straight game on Wednesday evening, defeating the fifth seeded Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 83-77 and advancing to the AMCC semifinals. The fans saw many ties and leads being exchanged throughout much of the game. Mount Aloysius heated up from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter, taking the lead twice on threes after the Spartans tied the game. D'Youville junior guard/forward Jean-Ann Korona hit two consecutive threes for D'Youville and gave the Spartans a 68-66 lead with 5:08 to go in the game. After senior forward Alexis Smith tied the game at 69 and then gave her team the lead at 70-69 with 4:36 to go, the Mounties would do everything they could to get the lead back. With 1:14 remaining in the game, Mount Aloysius pulled to within two but senior guard Danette Laguerre came in clutch from the line, making three free throws and extending D'Youville's lead to five. The Mounties held on as much as they could, but the Spartans held off the late charge and defeated Mount Aloysius by the final score of 83-77. In her second game back from injury, senior Shannon Dougherty led the Spartans in scoring with 17 points.
The AMCC women's basketball semifinals will take place at La Roche College on Saturday afternoon. #4 D'Youville will take on top-seeded La Roche at 1pm, while #3 Pitt-Bradford will face #2 Penn St. Behrend at 3pm.
