With four member member institutions sponsoring women's bowling
in 2013-14, the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference proudly
announces the inaugural season of their sixteenth league
championship. The AMCC is the first Division III conference
in the nation to sponsor women's bowling as a championship
sport.
"We are excited to be at the forefront of supporting this
very popular high school sport at the varsity intercollegiate
level," said league commissioner Donna Ledwin. "We are
hopeful that it will gain momentum at the Division III level in a
very short time. We would love to see a stand-alone Division
III championship in the not-too-distant future."
Medaille College (2007-08) and Penn St. Altoona (2009-10)
were the first AMCC members to sponsor women's bowling. They
are joined this year by Mount Aloysius College and the University
of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Several other AMCC institutions
have plans to move from club to varsity in the next few
years. The conference also will consider adding affiliate
members as the sport continues to grow in Division III.
Currently there are 10 Division III programs that sponsor women's
bowling at the varsity level. These schools compete against a
combination of Division I, II and III teams for an association-wide
national championship.
"Bowling is not just a high school or college activity, it's
a lifetime sport," said Penn St. Altoona head coach Lori
Tremmel. "It would be great if this move encouraged more
Division III schools to sponsor bowling, because it is highly
consistent with the Division III philosophy."
The AMCC regular season schedule features two quad matches,
one in November hosted by Penn St. Altoona and the other in January
hosted by Medaille. The championship tournament will be
February 8-9 in Bradford, PA.
