PENN COLLEGE DEFENDS AMCC MEN'S WRESTLING TITLE
Penn College defended its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Men's Wrestling Championship Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats narrowly edged Penn State Behrend 152.0 tournament points to 150.5 to secure its second consecutive conference title.
Alfred State College finished in third with 129.0 points and Pitt-Bradford was fourth with 62.0. Penn State Altoona rounded out the field with 11.0 points.
Alfred State junior Aaron Johnson was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the meet.
Penn College crowned three individual conference champions, had six more finalists and two fourth-place finishers in the tournament on their way to earning their second consecutive conference title. In an all-Penn College 141-pound final, junior Kaden Ware bested freshman Chase Shaner to earn his second-consecutive AMCC title. Sophomore 165-pounder Carter Davis earned his second gold medal with a medical forfeit victory in the finals and junior Nick Woodruff cemented the team title with a first period pin over Behrend's Abe Keep. Penn sophomore Blake Dergham (133), Shaner (141), junior TJ Martin (149), senior Brett Patton (157), freshman Gavin Gomes (174) and junior Nichoali Brotzman (285) all secured silver medal finishes. Placing fourth were freshman 165-pounder Logan Mickey and sophomore 184-pounder Cole Shupp.
Penn State Behrend saw four individual champions, three second-place finishers, one third-place honoree and one in fourth in claiming their second straight runner up finish at the championships. The Lions placed in all but one weight class and had seven wrestlers in the finals. Evan Whiteside (125), Junior Reynolds Jr. (133), Rudy Brown (149) and Steffan Lynch (157) were crowned AMCC Champions. After receiving a bye to start, Whiteside posted a 10-1 major decision in the semifinals before convincingly defeating Mason Drew of Alfred State 17-1 for his first AMCC title. Reynolds followed the same path as Whiteside, beginning with a bye then advanced on a 7-0 win and then never trailed in the finals, winning 5-1 over Blake Dergham of Penn. Brown is a repeat champion for Behrend, but at a different weight class, as he posted a technical fall in the semifinals (18-3) before winning the title with a 9-7 decision over TJ Martin of Penn Tech. The final title for the Lions went to Lynch at 157. Lynch went 3-0 on the day, starting with an 18-0 technical fall and then advancing with a 10-6 decision. In the finals, Lynch managed a 30-18 major decision against Brett Patton of Penn. At 165, Mason Savitz had a pair of tech. falls, but had to medical forfeit the finals for second place finish. Louie DeJulia (184) also went 2-1 on the day for second place and Abe Keep (197) registered a 7-0 win to advance to the finals before falling to Woodruff for second
Alfred State's Johnson took home the 285 title after going 2-0 on the day with two falls. The Most Outstanding Wrestler of the meet received a first-round bye, then tallied a 1:43 fall over Matthew Caldwell (PSUB) for a spot in the first-place match. In the championship bout, he tallied a 4:17 fall after being down 4-1 heading into the second-round. Pioneer senior Sean Malenfant secured the 184 title after going 3-0 on the day. Malenfant opened with a 2:31 fall over Jason Petroski (PCT). Then in the semi-final match, he tallied a 23-5 tech fall over Ryan Gildersleeve (PSUB) for a spot in the championship match. In the Championship match, Malenfant tallied a 1:55 fall over Louie DeJulia (PSUB) to take the 184 title. Mason Drew finished second in the 125 bracket. He opened the day with a 15-0 tech fall over Cade Stern (UPB). He followed with a 4:15 fall over Zach Dellinger (PSUB) for a spot in the first-place match. Drew would suffer a loss in the championship bout to take second.
Pitt-Bradford senior D.J. Slovick took first place in the 174 bracket, while Mike Worsen (133) and Ray Worsen (157) each registered third place finishes.
Penn State Altoona's Jarren McCloskey and Andrew Weaver each recorded fourth place finishes for the Lions.
