BEHREND HOLDS ON FOR 13TH AMCC WOMEN'S TENNIS TITLE
Penn St. Behrend has claimed its 13th AMCC women's tennis championship in dramatic fashion and will be heading to the NCAA championship tournament in May. The win certainly didn't come easy, as Pitt-Greensburg made the Lions work for every point they got.
Penn St. Behrend has claimed its 13th AMCC women's tennis championship in dramatic fashion and will be heading to the NCAA championship tournament in May. The win certainly didn't come easy, as Pitt-Greensburg made the Lions work for every point they got.
#2 Penn St. Behrend took the upper hand heading into singles play, as they went 2-1 in doubles action. Behrend's No. 1 doubles team of Alexandra Laffey and Chelsea Czerwinski and No. 3 Celeste Bentley and Kelly Miller both walked away with 8-1 victories over their Bobcat opponents. Pitt-Greensburg's No. 2 doubles team of Sydney Geary and Alexandra Claherty had a hard fought battle and came up big for the Bobcats. Geary and Claherty overcame a 7-4 decificit and held on for a 9-7 victory, giving UPG their only point in doubles play.
Pitt-Greensburg's Sydney Geary, playing No. 4 singles, was the first to walk off the court with a win (6-1, 6-0) and evened the score up at 2-2. Behrend got the next two wins from Alexandra Laffey and Malinda Miller, giving the Lions a 4-2 edge. However, Pitt-Greensburg still wasn't backing down and prevailed at No. 3 singles with Corinne Kirk defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-2 and also at No. 1 singles with Shayla Landman picking up the 7-6, 6-1 win, once again tying the match at 4-4. The final match between Pitt-Greensburg's Amanda Jepsen and Behrend's Colleen Miller was one for the record books. The intensity and back-and-forth play was so evenly matched that it was hard to tell who would come out on top. In in the end, Miller held on for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory and sealed the win for the Lions.
The Lions will travel to Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, MI, May 23-28 for the NCAA Championships.
