FRANCISCAN EARNS TOP SEED IN AMCC WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP
AMCC women's tennis teams will hit the court this weekend in the opening round of the 2018 AMCC women's tennis championship tournament.
AMCC women's tennis teams will hit the court this weekend in the opening round of the 2018 AMCC women's tennis championship tournament. On Saturday, October 20, #6 La Roche College will travel to #3 Mount Aloysius College, while #5 D'Youville College travels to #4 Medaille College on Sunday. #1. Franciscan University and #2 Penn State Altoona each earned first round byes.
Franciscan (8-0) once again earned the top seed after completing a flawless regular season in conference play. Seniors Maria Binette (No. 2) and Julia Razook (No. 4) and sophomore Ana Victoria Haddad (No. 3) each put together 8-0 records in AMCC singles action. The Barons' double teams were just as lethal, as No. 1 Binette/Conrad and No. 2 Haddad/Grace Hammel also recorded blemish-free records of 8-0.
Penn State Altoona (7-1) enters the tournament as the #2 seed. The Lions are led by freshman standout Jessica Stevens who recently broke the school single season record for the most singles victories in a year with 12. Stevens completed an 8-0 record in the No. 1 singles spot in conference play while junior Brayley Lewis went 5-3 at No. 2 singles.
With a 6-2 conerence mark, Mount Aloysius enters the tournament as the #3 seed. Senior Leah Stoehr compiled a 7-1 record at No. 4 singles, while junior Katelynn Arnold also went 7-1 in the No. 5 spot. Stoehr and No. 2 doubles partner Payton Whysong went 7-1 throughout league play, while No. 3 doubles partners Arnold and Maggie Willason went 7-0.
#4 Medaille, with a 4-3 conference record, is led by sophomore and 2017 AMCC Newcomer of the Year, Jasmine Mott. Mott earned a 5-2 record in the top singles spot while freshman Jessica Munson went 4-0 at No. 5 singles. Madison Knapp and Danielle Pitasi went 4-1 at No. 2 doubles.
D'Youville, also with a 4-3 conference mark, enters the tournament as the #5 seed. The Spartans were led all season by senior Gillian Wittig and freshman Lauren Karoglan. Karoglan put together a solid freshman campaign, going 5-2 at No. 1 singles spot, while Wittig went 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
Rounding out the tournament is #6 La Roche. Senior Miranda Lasher went 5-3 at No. 3 singles, while sophomore Alexandra Mroczkowski was 5-2 in the No. 6 spot.
First round matches will take place on Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 21. #6 La Roche will travel to #3 Mount Aloysius on Saturday, and #5 D'Youville will take on #4 Medaille Sunday afternoon. #1 Franciscan and #2 Penn St. Altoona will receive first round byes.
The semifinals and championship matches will be on October 27 and 28 at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, PA. The tournament winner will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Please visit the AMCC Fall Championships page for full championships coverage.
