BEHREND, ALTOONA ADVANCE TO WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Top seed Penn State Behrend and No. 2 seed Penn State Altoona each earned victories in the semifinal round of the AMCC women's tennis championship tournament to advance to the championship match slated for Sunday afternoon.
Penn State Behrend 4, Mount Aloysius 0
The No. 1 Penn State Behrend women's tennis team defeated No. 4 Mount Aloysius 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, PA.
The Behrend Lions defeated Mount Aloysius for the second time this season without giving up a set point. The Lions won in an abbreviated match, as four matches were unfinished, including one double and three singles matches. Behrend won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches for the point, halting No. 1 doubles with Mt. Aloysius leading 4-3. Tamanna Sharma was the deciding singles match at the No. 1 spot. Sharma tallied a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) victory over her opponent for the final margin at 4-0. Lauren Burkley and Lindsey Kerlin teamed up for a 6-1 No. 2 doubles win. Lexa Maloney and Triss Righi earned a 6-2 decision at No. 3 doubles for a 1-0 lead in the match. Kerlin and Maloney was also winner in singles action along with Sharma. At No. 4, Kerlin tallied a 6-1, 6-1 score and Maloney posted a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 to give the Lions a 3-0 edge. Sharma then sealed the victory at No. 1 singles.
Penn State Altoona 4, Pitt-Greensburg 0
The No. 2 seed Penn State Altoona women's tennis team cruised to a 4-0 victory over No. 3 seed Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday evening.
Penn State Altoona staked out a lead by the conclusion of doubles play, winning two out of three matches for the opening point. The Lions won No. 4 through No. 6 singles to end the overall match at decision and eliminate Pitt-Greensburg (4-7) from the conference tournament.
The Bobcats prevailed in the No. 1 doubles match, but Penn State Altoona got wins in the other two spots to seize the match's first point. In No. 2 doubles, the duo of Sienna Fell /Abigail Morgan rattled off a 6-4 victory for their 10th win together this season, and the Lions won by forfeit in the No. 3 doubles spot to take a 1-0 lead into singles.
In singles, Penn State Altoona picked up three quick points to end the match in a 4-0 win over Pitt-Greensburg. Fell and Morgan each registered their 13th singles win of the season, tying for the most on the team, as Fell defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 match while Morgan also blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. The Bobcats yielded a point to Penn State Altoona by forfeit in the No. 6 match, and the Lions clinched the postseason victory.
Penn State Behrend and Penn State Altoona will now advance to the AMCC Championship match tomorrow, Sunday, October 19 at 1:30 p.m. at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, PA.
