The Lady Barons upset the #2 seed Penn State Altoona in a five-set thriller. They cruised to a 25-13 first set win, only to drop a 29-27 decision in the second. Franciscan re-grouped in set 3 (25-21) only to see the Lady Lions roar back, 25-18. The deciding set went 15-12 in the Lady Barons' favor. Dani Link and Christina Lawrence both chalked up 20 kills for Franciscan while setter Mary Moore racked up 24 assists and 22 digs. The Altoona attack was spread out among Kelsey Bristol (15 kills), Tori Shingler (13 kills) and Amanda Hammer (12 kills). Libero Emily Baker recorded 32 digs.
#6 seed La Roche College gave the Lady Mavericks a run for their money in a 3-1 win by Medaille. After the host team took the opening set 25-19, the Lady Redhawks pushed back with a 25-12 effort in the second. Medaille battled hard to take the next two sets by margins of 25-21 and 32-30. Kayla Lurry led all La Roche hitters with 9 kills, while setter Sarah Storino had 18 assists and libero Kelly Slates had 27 digs. The Lady Mavs had stellar performances from setter Simmone Talford (43 assists, 10 kills, 12 digs) and hitter Susan Muldoon (24 kills, 4 blocks).
The finals, hosted by Medaille, will start at 1pm on Sunday. The winner will earn the AMCC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
