D'YOUVILLE NAMES CATHY HUMMEL HEAD WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL COACH

The D’Youville College athletic department and Director of Athletics Brian Cavanaugh are pleased to announce that Cathleen Hummel will be leading the women’s volleyball program as head coach, effective immediately.

Hummel comes to D’Youville with a wealth of experience of coaching at the collegiate level. For nearly 15 years, Hummel was in charge of the Canisius Golden Griffins women’s volleyball program. Throughout her time at Canisius, Hummel led the Golden Griffs to the MAAC Championship semifinals three times in six-season span and five times overall. She is the winningest coach in program history.

At Canisius, Cathy was named MAAC Coach of the Year in 2008, two years following a program record 22-win season. Her first coach of the year award came in 2003 as she led the team to their first winning record in 10 seasons.

More than a coach during her tenure at Canisius, Hummel also served as an adjunct sports management professor from 2013-16. She also earned her Master’s degree in Sports Management.

Prior to her time at Canisius, Hummel was an assistant coach at the University at Buffalo and Dowling College before that. Her collegiate playing career began at James Madison University where she played two seasons, being named Colonial Athletic Conference MVP in 1987. She then moved onto Hofstra University where she graduated in 1991 with a Communication degree following MVP performances at the ECAC Championships in 1988 and 1990.

The D’Youville women’s volleyball team reached the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoffs last season as the fifth overall seed with 5-4 record. They ended their season strong by winning three of their final four regular season matches and had two all-conference players. The team will begin their season on Friday, August 31 as they travel to Cortland to play Cortland and Keene State.

Cathy currently lives in North Tonawanda with her husband and two children.
